The Border Security Force (BSF) of India has reportedly shot and killed a Bangladeshi youth and taken his body across the border at Dattagram in Sharifpur union under Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar.

The incident occurred around 11:30pm on Saturday, in the no-man’s land along the upazila border.

The youth killed in the BSF firing was identified as Pradeep Baidya, 22, a resident of Dattagram in Kulaura upazila and the son of Shailendra Baidya.

Zainul Islam, a member of Ward 9 of Sharifpur union parishad in Kulaura upazila, said Pradeep Baidya’s body is currently at a Kailashahar hospital in India.

He added that Pradeep used to work in agriculture while continuing his studies. "He was shot and killed by the BSF near the border fence and his body was taken away. We tried but could not do anything at night,” he said.

Zainul told Dhaka Tribune that he was with Pradeep’s family members and planning to file a general diary (GD) regarding the incident at Kulaura police station.

Lieutenant Colonel ASM Zakaria, commander of the 46 BGB Battalion in Sreemangal, said the incident took place inside Indian territory.

He confirmed that the body was taken to an Indian hospital, and following legal procedures, the Indian police will hand over the body to their Bangladeshi counterparts.
