One person has died after tidal surges, driven by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, flooded low-lying areas of Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased, identified as Danu Mia, 40.
The incident occurred around 1pm on Thursday, in Ghatibhanga under Kutubjum union of the upazila.
Danu Mia was the son of Nur Hossain from the same area.
According to local sources, Danu Mia was returning home from Ghatibhanga bazar in Kutubjum union when he was swept away by the rising tide.
Onlookers rescued him and took him to the emergency department of Moheshkhali Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
According to the Meteorological Office, the tidal water rose by three to four feet above normal due to inclement weather. As a result, parts of Kutubjum, Dhalghata, and Matarbari unions were inundated.
Moheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Hedayet Ullah said: “Tidal water levels rose in the coastal areas. One person drowned while returning home in the afternoon.”
