The names of 12 structures, including the administrative building of Rajshahi University (RU), have been renamed.
This decision was taken during the university’s 539th Syndicate meeting held on Thursday night. The matter was confirmed by the university’s Acting Registrar, Professor Dr Iftekharul Alam Masud.
The newly renamed structures are as follows:
Syed Nazrul Islam Administrative Building and Shaheed Mansur Ali Administrative Building have been renamed to “Administrative Building 1” and “Administrative Building 2”.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall has been renamed to “Bijoy 24 Hall”.
Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall is now “July 36 Hall”.
Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Senate Building has been renamed simply as “Senate Building”.
Sheikh Kamal Stadium has been renamed to “Rajshahi University Stadium”.
Dr Kudrat-e-Khuda Academic Building and Dr M A Wazed Miah Academic Building have been renamed to “Jabir Ibn Hayyan Building” and “Jamal Nazrul Building”, respectively.
Faculty of Agriculture Building has been renamed to “Agriculture Building”.
Additionally, Sheikh Russell Model School has been renamed to “Rajshahi University Model School”.
The Kazla Gate and Binodpur Gate of the university have been renamed to “Shaheed Sakib Anjum Gate” and “Shaheed Ali Raihan Gate”, respectively.
The university’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), Dr Mohammad Main Uddin, told the media: “We had directives from higher levels of the government regarding the renaming of the buildings. Accordingly, the Syndicate meeting decided to rename them.”
He further added: “Due to budgetary constraints and some procedural complications involving two newly constructed halls, their names have not been changed at this moment. Once construction is completed, we will make a decision regarding their renaming as well.”
