The interim vice-chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (Kuet), Professor Dr Md Hazrat Ali has resigned in the face of ongoing protests by faculty members.
The matter was confirmed by the university’s Registrar Engineer Md Anisur Rahman Bhuiyan.
According to a reliable source at the University Grants Commission (UGC), Dr Hazrat Ali has submitted his resignation and returned to his original post at Cuet.
Following his resignation last Wednesday, he also returned the official vehicle assigned to the vice-chancellor of Kuet.
He had been appointed as the interim vice-chancellor on April 30, replacing Professor Dr Md Masud, who was removed after two and a half months of continuous student protests.
However, shortly after his appointment, the university’s academic activities came to a halt due to protests by the faculty.
Students of the 2019 batch also joined the movement in solidarity with the teachers.
On Wednesday, the protesting teachers issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding his resignation.
Amid the escalating tension, Dr Hazrat Ali left Kuet and traveled to Dhaka.
As of now, no one has been appointed as vice-chancellor or pro vice-chancellor to resolve the ongoing deadlock at Kuet.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr S M A Faiz has acknowledged that the unrest in the university is a direct consequence of the teachers’ movement.
