Garment workers of BHIS Limited blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for two hours, demanding their due salaries for the month of April. As a result, vehicular movement on both sides of the highway was brought to a halt.
On Saturday, from around 9:15am to 11:15am, over a hundred workers participated in the protest and demonstration in the Tongi Hossain Market area.
Tongi West Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habib Iskander said that workers stopped traffic movement on both sides of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway starting from 9:15am as part of their demonstration.
According to the Industrial Police, 1,300 workers of BHIS Limited, located in the Dattapara area of Tongi, blocked both sides of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway near Tongi Hossain Market since morning to demand their unpaid salaries for April.
OC Faridul Islam of Tongi East Police Station reported that the workers were eventually persuaded to vacate the highway. “We are working to resolve the issue by holding discussions with both the owners and the workers,” he added.
Traffic has since returned to normal, though workers are still present in the vicinity of the factory.
Efforts to contact any representative of the B.H.I.S. Limited factory management were unsuccessful.
