A Bangladeshi national was reportedly injured after being shot by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Akhaura border in Brahmanbaria.
The injured, 28-year-old Asadul Islam, is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Brahmanbaria.
The incident occurred around 11:30am on Friday in the village of Itna under Monionda Union of Akhaura upazila.
According to local residents, the upazila administration, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sources, Asadul Islam was crossing a river around 11am when BSF personnel on patrol, approximately 100 yards inside Indian territory from the border, fired three rubber bullets at him, causing injuries.
Locals later rescued him and took him to a private hospital in Brahmanbaria. However, neither the Akhaura Upazila Health Complex nor Brahmanbaria General Hospital reported admitting any such patient.
Dr Himel Khan, the upazila health and family planning officer in Akhaura, said: “Many people have called about the patient, but no one by that name has come to the health complex.”
Lieutenant Colonel Ziaur Rahman, commander of BGB-60 Battalion, told the media: “The injured man could not be found at his home. He had entered Indian territory illegally, at which point BSF members fired at him, injuring him.”
Akhaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) GM Rashedul Islam said: “A man was injured by BSF gunfire. He had crossed into Indian territory. However, according to his brother, who is a union parishad chairman, he is now out of danger.”
