A group of students in Narayanganj organized a program titled 'March for Dr Yunus', demanding reforms before elections.

They held a rally followed by a protest march at the Central Shaheed Minar in the Chashara area of the city on Friday afternoon, reports Bangla Tribune.

During the event, the speakers said: “For the past 17 years, people have not been able to vote in proper elections. Yet now, most people in the country don’t even want elections. They want constitutional reforms first, and then elections. Go and ask the people for their opinion—hold a Constituent Assembly election and see for yourself. The majority will vote against holding an election under the current system. We are the first to raise our voice from Narayanganj. This voice will now echo across the remaining 63 districts. There will be no election before justice for the killer, Hasina, and reforms of the country.”

The speakers further said: “To those who are demanding only an election roadmap without any reforms—we say, we too want elections, but only after justice for the July killings, constitutional reforms, judicial reforms, education system reforms, banking sector reforms, law and order reforms, public recruitment reforms, and electoral system reforms. Once these reforms are in place, we will have no objection to elections.

“However, those who are obsessively calling for elections now are starting to sound like Delhi and the disgraced Awami League. We sense the stench of authoritarianism in their words. If you truly care for the country, if the nation matters to you, then strengthen Yunus’s hand. We do not want elections before fundamental reforms.”

Among those present at the event were students Md Alif Dewan, Robiul Islam Robin, Al Amin Bin Arshad Ali, Fahim Khondokar Onik, and Rabbi Islam Niloy, among others.

Earlier, on Monday, these students also held a human chain in front of the Narayanganj Press Club with the same demands.
