The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly entered Bangladeshi territory at the Hatibandha border in Lalmonirhat and shot a young man named Hasibul Alam, 24, in the eye after detaining him.
The incident occurred around noon on Wednesday near sub-pillar 6S of main pillar 894 along the Madhya Singimari border in the upazila, reports Bangla Tribune.
In response to rising tensions along the border following the incident, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police have been deployed to the area.
Hasibul Alam is reported to be the son of Zahidul Islam, a resident of the area.
According to eyewitnesses, Hasibul, along with several others, had gone to cut grass on Bangladeshi land near the border.
At that time, a BSF patrol team from the Nagar Singimari camp in Shitalkuchi, India, allegedly crossed into Bangladeshi territory.
The patrol team detained Hasibul from behind and took him into Indian territory.
While attempting to place him in a BSF vehicle, they reportedly shot him in the eye.
Later, the BSF admitted him to a hospital in Cooch Behar, according to a source at the border.
BGB sources stated that preparations are underway for a flag meeting between BGB and BSF regarding the incident.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatibandha police station Mahamudun Nabi said: “Border residents have informed me that a young man named Hasibul was taken from the border by the Indian BSF and shot. I am currently at the border.”
