Chhatra League activist stabbed to death in Sylhet, one held

Locals said two factions of the banned BCL clashed over an internal issue in the Daldali Tea Garden area of Shahi Eidgaon around 10pm

Police detained one person after an activist of the banned Chhatra League was stabbed to death during a factional clash in Sylhet city on Tuesday night.

The deceased was Tushar Ahmed Chowdhury, 21, a follower of the city unit of the Awami League's Joint General Secretary Bidhan Kumar Saha.

Locals said two groups of the Chhatra League got locked into an altercation over an internal issue in the Daldali Tea Garden area of Shahi Eidgaon in the city around 10pm.

At one stage, rivals stabbed him with sharp weapons, leaving the youth critically injured, they said.

Later, he was taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where physicians declared him dead upon arrival.

Syed Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Airport police station under the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), said the altercation between two groups led to the killing.

One of the troublemakers, identified as Jabed Ahmed, was detained in this connection, he said, adding that efforts are underway to detain the rest others.
