Police have released the five individuals detained in connection with the vandalism of a stage set up for Bangla New Year celebrations at DC Hill in Chittagong, with no cases being filed.
They were released early on Monday morning and police confirmed that no case has been filed regarding the incident, according to media reports.
The vandalism occurred around 7pm on Sunday, when a group of people broke the stage during a procession.
Police arrived at the scene shortly afterward and detained five individuals from the surrounding area, taking them to Kotwali police station.
Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Karim said: “Five individuals were brought to the station for questioning. Since no complaints were filed against them by night, we released them on a General Diary (GD) bond.”
As in previous years, the Sammilito Pahela Baishakh Udjapan Parishad had arranged celebrations to welcome the New Year at DC Hill, with permission from the district administration.
However, after the vandalism during event preparations, the organizers canceled the celebration.
This marks the first time in 47 years that the New Year celebration at DC Hill has been disrupted.
The event has been held annually since 1978, except for two years during the Covid-19 pandemic.
