Six people drowned in separate incidents in Comilla, Gopalganj, and Khagrachhari on Friday.
Among the deceased were four children and two teenage girls.
The incidents occurred at different times throughout the day.
Comilla
Two cousins drowned in a pond in Monohargonj upazila of Comilla.
The incident took place at Hashem Master's residence in Barla village of Uttar Howla union, confirmed Monohargonj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bipul Chandra Dey.
The deceased were Abdul, 3, son of Mainuddin, and Mahadi, 4, son of Mohinuddin—both from Barla village and cousins, the OC added.
According to police and local residents, the families were busy cooking when the two children were playing in the yard. It is assumed that during play, they fell into the nearby pond.
After about an hour, their bodies were found floating in the water, they said.
Family members rushed them to a private hospital in the Natherpetua Station Bazar area, where the attending doctor declared them dead.
OC Bipul Chandra said that a police team had visited the site of the incident.
Gopalganj
In Gopalganj, two children named Omar Faruk, 2, and Nusrat Khanam, 8, drowned in separate incidents.
The incidents occurred around noon in Chourkhuli and Hijolbari villages under Kotalipara upazila, confirmed Kotalipara police station OC Abul Kalam Azad.
Omar Faruk was the son of Jasim Sheikh from Chourkhuli village in Kushla union, and Nusrat Khanam was the daughter of Moshior Hajra from Hijolbari village.
Omar Faruk’s grandfather Jeharul Sheikh said: “His mother left him sitting in the yard while she went to the pond to wash clothes. After a while, when we couldn't find him, we searched around and found his body floating in the pond on the west side of the house. He was taken to Kotalipara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead."
In a separate incident, Nusrat Khanam went to watch an excavator digging a fish enclosure near the house with some neighbors.
On her way back home alone, she slipped and fell into the enclosure near the house of one Bijoy Master. A local child named Jonaid saw her fall and informed the family, as per OC Abul Kalam.
She was rescued and taken to the same health complex, where she was also declared dead, he added.
OC Abul Kalam said that as the families had no complaints, no autopsy was performed.
Khagrachhari
Two teenage girls drowned in the Chengi River in the Vaibonchhara area under the Sadar upazila of Khagrachhari.
The deceased were identified as Ria Chakma, 17, daughter of Rupayon Chakma, and Piyasi (Betty) Chakma, 14, daughter of Bideshi Chakma—both from the same locality, confirmed Khagrachhari Sadar police station OC Abdul Baten Mridha.
OC Abdul Baten, quoting locals, said that five teenage girls had gone to the river to search for snails.
"Ria lost her balance and fell into the river, and when Piyasi jumped in to save her, she too drowned due to the river’s depth. The others present at the scene called for help, and after an hour of searching with nets, both bodies were recovered," he added.
