Another robbery has taken place at gunpoint on a moving passenger bus in the Bank Town area of Savar, Dhaka.

This incident occurred on Friday, around 12pm on a Dhaka-bound passenger bus of Savar Paribahan on the bridge adjacent to the Bank Town area along the Dhaka-Aricha highway.

During the incident, a senior journalist from Savar, Taifur Rahman, was also a victim of the robbery.

Speaking over the phone, journalist Taifur Rahman said: “Around 12pm, I boarded the bus from Bank Town with my wife and child on our way to Shyamoli. Just after the bus passed Bank Town and got onto the bridge before Police Town, 3 to 4 young men who were already on the bus pulled out knives and primarily targeted the female passengers. They snatched chains and gold jewellery from the women. At that time, they also took a locket and a gold chain from my wife’s neck.”

“There were about 20 to 25 passengers on the bus. However, the robbers did not take anyone’s phone or device. They specifically targeted the female passengers. At least 3 female passengers had their chains snatched by the robbers,” he added.

However, it was not immediately possible to contact other passengers on the bus regarding the robbery.

Taifur Rahman further said that after the bus reached Gabtoli, the passengers took the driver to a counter and detained him. Later, the driver left the place.

Although he could not confirm exactly from where the robbers boarded the bus, he mentioned that during the robbery, the criminals made the bus stop on the bridge and got off there after the robbery.

Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Jewel Mia said:“I haven’t received any such report yet. We already have a checkpost at that location. I’m looking into the matter.”

It is to be noted that recently, to prevent robberies on highways and in moving buses in Savar, the Dhaka District Police has been conducting special checkpost operations at various key points along the Dhaka-Aricha highway—particularly in robbery-prone areas like Bank Town.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle), Md Shahinur Kabir, such operations by the police began on April 5 to prevent robberies on highways and moving buses.

Later, during visits to various areas including Bank Town in Savar, it was observed that multiple teams from the Savar Model Police Station and the North Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka District Police were stopping various moving passenger buses, especially local buses, and conducting searches.

During this time, police officers were seen asking passengers whether they were facing any issues or had noticed anything suspicious, as well as giving various awareness messages to the passengers.

Despite the ongoing checkpost and search operations by the police, robbery on a moving bus happened on Friday.
