Three people were killed and around 50 others injured when a truck collided with two buses carrying Jamaat-e-Islami members in front of Varendra University in the Kharkhari area on the outskirts of Rajshahi city early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Jewel Ahmed, 40, Nasim Uddin, 45, and Mizanur Rahman, 32—all from Ghora Pakhia village in Ranihati union of Shibganj upazila, Chapainawabganj—said Chandrima Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Motiar Rahman.
The crash occurred around 1am when a truck rammed into the buses, causing one of them to veer off the road and fall into a ditch.
The two buses were carrying about 90 passengers—leaders, activists, and supporters of Jamaat’s Ranihati union unit—said Jasim Uddin Sarkar, former organisational secretary of Rajshahi city Jamaat. They were headed to Pirojpur to visit the grave of late Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.
At least 15 of the injured are in critical condition and are being treated at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, and legal proceedings are underway, the OC added.
