A traffic congestion stretched across 15 kilometres on the Comilla section of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway after a sand-laden truck overturned on Friday morning.
Although the truck was removed promptly, the congestion continued to spread, reports Bangla Tribune.
The accident took place at the entrance of Elliotganj Bazar around 11:30am.
Currently, the congestion extends 10 kilometres on the Chittagong-bound lane and five kilometres on the Dhaka-bound lane.
According to local sources, at around 11:40am, the sand-laden truck lost control and overturned on the Chittagong-bound lane near Elliotganj Bazar. This led to severe congestion on that side of the highway.
Within an hour, the Highway Police managed to remove the truck. However, some vehicles began moving in the wrong direction to avoid the jam, causing congestion on both sides of the road.
According to drivers, the traffic congestion on the Chittagong-bound lane has spread from Elliotganj to Raipur, covering nearly 10 kilometres.
On the Dhaka-bound lane, the congestion extends from Kutumbpur to Elliotganj highway police station.
Meanwhile, Highway Police, the army, and local administration officials are working to ease the congestion. Several teams have been deployed to prevent vehicles from entering the wrong lane.
Elliotganj highway police station Officer-in-Charge Dewan Kaushik Ahmed said: "The truck has been removed, but vehicles entering the wrong lane have worsened the situation. We are working to resolve it, and traffic is now moving slowly."
