Three people were detained for holding red flags and staging a flash procession in favour of Awami League at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar around 11am on Wednesday.
During the procession, they were heard chanting slogans in support of the Awami League.
At that moment, the surrounding crowd chased them, with some individuals allegedly being assaulted.
Subsequently, the police intervened and detained the three individuals from the scene.
According to law enforcement, the detainees were activists of the Muktijoddha Projonmo League.
In a WhatsApp message, Additional Superintendent of Police for Dhaka District Shahinur Kabir, said that around 11am, a group of five to six individuals attempted to destabilize the occasion of Independence Day by chanting provocative slogans at the National Martyrs’ Memorial.
In response, Ashulia police detained them.
The individuals have been identified as Selim Reza, 47, general secretary of the central committee of the Muktijoddha Sangsad Santan Command, Md Shahidul Islam, 50, organizational secretary of the same organization and Md Sohel Parvez, 41, from the Kalma area of Ashulia.
Witnesses reported that at around 11:30am, at least 50 individuals carrying red flags were chanting slogans in favour of Awami League.
At that point, local residents chased them, with some facing physical assault.
Eventually, the police arrived and took three individuals into custody, transferring them to Ashulia Police Station.
While in the police vehicle following their arrest, one of the detainees said: “We are the children of freedom fighters. The National Martyrs’ Memorial symbolizes the sacrifices of the Liberation War. We came here to pay our respects.”
