A 56-year-old man was tuened over to the police after being beaten by locals for allegedly attempting to rape a schoolgirl in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila, Lalmonirhat, on Sunday.
The man, identified as Meher Ali, hails from Gokunda village in the upazila, police said.
Mohammad Nurnabi, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar police station, said Meher tried to violate the schoolgirl while she was on her way to a farm in the Kashirjhar area.
Hearing her screams, locals caught Meher and beat him up before turning him over to the police, he added.
