A collision occurred between Dhumketu Express and Banglabandha Express at Rajshahi Railway Station due to a signal error on Saturday, around 2pm.
One of the trains was heading to the wash pit for cleaning, while the other was coming out.
Since both trains were empty, no casualties were reported.
However, one coach from each train derailed due to the collision.
Bangladesh Railway General Manager (West) Mamunul Islam, confirmed the incident, saying that Banglabandha Express was exiting the wash pit after cleaning when the Dhumketu Express mistakenly entered the adjacent track due to a signal error.
This resulted in a side collision between the two trains, causing their coaches to derail.
Fortunately, as there were no passengers, no one was injured.
He further said that the rescue operation had begun, but it would take some time. Due to the accident, train schedules would be delayed, and it was uncertain how long it would take to resume passenger transport. Appropriate actions would be taken against those responsible.
Shahabul Islam, the wash pit supervisor at Rajshahi Railway Station, explained that Banglabandha Express was heading towards the station from the wash pit, while Padma Express was moving towards the wash pit from the station.
Due to a signal point issue, Padma Express collided with Banglabandha Express, causing it to derail. Several coaches of both trains were damaged, with Padma Express suffering the most damage.
Rajshahi Railway Station Master Abul Kalam Azad said that Padma Express was scheduled to depart for Dhaka at 4:00pm, but due to the ongoing rescue operation, it might be delayed. Authorities have already been notified to send a recovery train.
