Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the robbery of three buses carrying students on a study tour in Ghatail, Tangail, also recovering some phones, weapons and cash.
Ainal Haque, 37, son of Abdul Alek, Md Fazlu, 41, son of Minnat Ali, Ainal Haque, 37, son of the late Bashir Uddin, and Nasir, 35, son of Arfan Ali, all residents of Ghatail, were nabbed on Wednesday during raids at various locations in the upazila.
During the operation, law enforcement recovered multiple mobile phones, flashlights, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, hammers, a gold ring, a machete and a significant amount of cash from their possession.
On Thursday afternoon, the arrested suspects were presented before a Tangail court and subsequently sent to jail.
Ghatail police station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Sajal Khan said the four suspects have been apprehended based on suspicions.
A petition has been filed in court to confirm their identities through the plaintiff.
The robbery took place at approximately 4am on Tuesday in the Lakshmaner Badh area of Sagardighi union under Ghatail upazila.
A gang of robbers intercepted the buses by blocking the road with logs and subsequently looted valuables, including around Tk1 lakh in cash, one tola of gold and 10 smartphones.
A group of teachers, students and their guardians from Sowaitpur High School in Fulbaria upazila, Mymensingh, had embarked on a study tour to Green Valley Park in Natore on four buses.
Upon reaching the Lakshmaner Badh area, a group of robbers obstructed the road by placing logs and forced the buses to stop.
Subsequently, 10 to 12 armed robbers stormed three of the buses and robbed the teachers, students and guardians of cash, mobile phones and other valuables.
The passengers immediately called the national emergency helpline, 999, but the robbers managed to escape before police arrived.
During the attack, Shakhawat Hossain Robin, the school’s computer lab operator and guardian Shahidullah Talukder were physically assaulted.
Additionally, several students lost consciousness due to trauma.
At around 12:30am on Wednesday, Mohammad Khalilur Rahman, the headmaster of the school, filed a case at Ghatail police station, accusing 10 to 12 unidentified individuals of the crime.
