A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was killed after being hit by a speeding bus while trying to manage traffic congestion on the Comilla-Noakhali regional highway.

The incident took place at Syedpur Bazar in the Bagmara Uttar Bazar area of Lalmai upazila on Friday at around 7pm.

The deceased, Jasim Uddin, 52, was a resident of Syedpur Paschim Para in Bagmara Uttar Union and the son of the late Ali Ashraf Mollah. He was an active member of the local Jamaat-e-Islami unit.

According to party activists and eyewitnesses, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman was travelling to Lakshmipur on an organizational tour via the Comilla-Noakhali regional highway.

In the evening, his convoy of four vehicles was caught in traffic congestion at Uttar Bazar in Lalmai. To ease the situation, he and around 10-15 party workers began managing traffic. After the convoy moved ahead towards a street gathering, Jasim Uddin was struck and killed by a bus.

Eyewitnesses reported that a speeding Dhaka-bound bus from Tisha Paribahan ran over Jasim Uddin, crushing his head. While the bus fled the scene, enraged locals managed to seize another bus from the same company.

Jasim Uddin’s brother, Mohammad Ibrahim, said that he was taken to a hospital in Comilla Sadar South, where doctors declared him dead. His body was later taken home. Local Jamaat leaders have assured the family of their support.

Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shah Alam confirmed the incident, saying that Jasim Uddin died in a road accident at Bagmara Uttar Bazar.

He added that the body was taken home by the family, and no formal complaint had been received yet regarding the incident.
