A group of people vandalized ‘Bangabandhu Swadhinota Smritistambha’ at Swadhinata Chattar in Faridpur’s Boalmari upazila on Saturday morning.
They destroyed the memorial, featuring a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sitting on a boat, using an excavator around 9:30am.
Boalmari Police Station Sub-Inspector Sharif Abdur Rashid said police tried to stop the vandalism.
Boalmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Golam Rasul said the Chief Adviser of the interim government has called for refraining from vandalizing any establishments in the country.
Boalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tanvir Hasan Chowdhury said that higher authorities said the situation is now under control.
After visiting the site, we will consult with local people and take steps, he added.
