Family members on Tuesday obstructed the exhumation of the body of Shykh Aashhabul Yamin, a student killed during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Savar.

Following the court’s order, officials from the Dhaka district administration and Savar model police station arrived to exhume the body from the grave.

However, after a written request from the family, the body retrieval process was suspended.

Yamin was killed during the movement on July 18 in Savar. He was buried in the Bank Town area.

Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Ali Hasan, along with Savar police, arrived in the Bank Town area to exhume Yamin’s body.

With the help of Yamin’s uncle, Md Abdullah Al Munkadir, they identified Yamin’s grave and then went to Yamin’s home to discuss the exhumation with the family members.

The family members expressed their objection to exhuming the body.

Munkadir said: "Neither Yamin's father nor mother wants the body to be exhumed. Yamin was buried with martyr status. There is video footage, pictures, and all the evidence of his murder.

"We can seek justice with this evidence. Therefore, on behalf of the entire family, I have submitted a written request to the court not to exhume the body."

He further said: "I have filed two cases in the International Crimes Tribunal and a lower court in Dhaka regarding the murder of Yamin."

Executive Magistrate Md Ali Hasan said: "In accordance with the court’s directive, an initiative was taken to exhume Yamin's body and prepare a report. However, Yamin’s family members are not willing to exhume the body, as they believe Yamin has been honoured as a martyr. They have submitted a written objection to the exhumation."

"We will inform the court about the request and take further steps as per the court's decision. The body retrieval process has been temporarily suspended." He said.

Shykh Aashhabul Yamin was a fourth-year student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (Mist) in Mirpur, Dhaka.
