The military has taken control of the area around Tungipara police station in Gopalganj after an attack on police officers during a confrontation involving local Awami League and Chhatra League members.

The military has stationed armored vehicles around the police station for security purposes, with patrols continuing throughout Monday afternoon.

The incident unfolded on Sunday when, around 7:30pm, a clash broke out between local activists distributing Awami League leaflets in front of Khan Saheb Sheikh Mosharraf Hossain School and College in Tungipara and police officers who attempted to stop the distribution.

The altercation escalated when the police arrested local resident Shafayet Gazi for obstructing their duties. In response, a group of locals surrounded and vandalized the police vehicle, resulting in the confinement of a police officer.

The situation further escalated as additional police officers from the station arrived at the scene and were also met with resistance.

Five police officers were injured during the attack. In the aftermath, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Moinul Haque arrived at the scene and managed to de-escalate the situation, freeing the detained officer and ensuring his safe return to the station.

Following the attack, the military deployed armoured vehicles to safeguard Tungipara police station and maintain law and order in the area.

A heavy presence of both police and military personnel has been reported around the station, with additional law enforcement units also deployed to the surrounding area.

Tungipara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khorshed Alam confirmed that the attackers were local supporters of the Awami League.

“For the safety of our police station and personnel, the military has secured the area with armoured vehicles. Five of our officers were injured in the attack, and legal proceedings are underway against the perpetrators,” Khorshed said.

UNO Moinul Haque said the situation had been brought under control, saying: “After hearing reports of the police vehicle being vandalized and an officer being confined, I arrived at the scene. I managed to calm the situation, rescuing the officer and bringing him back safely to the OC. The area is now peaceful, and security is being maintained.”
