Police have recovered the body of a six-year-old child, who went missing 16 hours earlier while visiting his maternal grandparents' house in Kapasia, Gazipur.
The body of the child, Safayat Sajid, was discovered early Wednesday near Kuisha Canal in Madhyapara village of Kapasia sadar, confirmed Kapasia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain.
Earlier on Tuesday, Sajid went missing from his maternal grandparents' house in Madhyapara village.
He was the only son of Saudi expatriate Sohag Mia from Dushya Narayanpur village and was a nursery student at Bangataj Pre-Cadet Academy in Kapasia.
Sajid’s grandfather, Mojibur Rahman, said that his daughter had come to visit with Sajid around five or six days ago.
On Tuesday afternoon, the child went missing, and despite extensive searches, he was not found.
The next morning, while searching near the riverbank with Sajid’s mother, they discovered his body inside a shopping bag in a bush near a sand depot close to their house.
OC Kamal Hossain said that upon receiving information about the body near Kuisha Canal, police recovered it from the scene.
He said: "The child was found wearing pants, a yellow T-shirt, and holding a plastic bag. He was strangled to death with an object. Two individuals have been detained for questioning."
"The body has been sent to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for an autopsy, and a murder case is being filed in connection with the incident," he added.
