One person has been arrested in a case filed over vandalism at Rajshahi Railway Station during a strike called by Bangladesh Railway's running staff.

Police arrested Sumon Ahmed, 23, in Chuadanga, late on Tuesday and later brought him to Rajshashi, said Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian.

Sumon was identified as the key instigator of the vandalism, he added.

Faisal Bin Ahsan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajshahi railway police station, said Station Master Shahidul Alam filed the case, adding that Sumon will be presented in court for further legal proceedings.

Train services came to a halt on Tuesday due to the aforementioned strike, prompting furious passengers to vandalize Rajshahi Railway Station.

The protest erupted between 7am and 8am, during which hundreds of stranded passengers demonstrated and vandalized station property.

The protesters smashed chairs and tables inside the ticket examiner’s (TTE) office, while other rooms remained locked. Some station chairs were also destroyed.

The situation was brought under control only after troops were deployed.

Once security forces arrived, the passengers calmed down, collected refunds for their tickets and left the station peacefully.
