During a meeting at Sutrapur police station on Saturday, Suhrawardy College Chhatra Dal President Jasim Uddin accused Jagannath University (JnU) Shibir Secretary Riazul Islam of being affiliated with Chhatra League, causing a disruption.
Later, realizing his mistake, Jasim Uddin apologized to Riazul Islam.
The incident occurred at a citizen meeting organized by the police.
The commotion began when a photograph of Riazul was shown, alleging his affiliation with Chhatra League.
The situation escalated to chaos, prompting the police to intervene and escort Riazul to the officer-in-charge's (OC) office to diffuse the tension.
As Chhatra Shibir and Chhatra Dal activists began gathering at the police station, the situation became increasingly heated.
However, the police eventually resolved the matter.
Speaking about the incident, Riazul Islam said: "They showed a photo of me with the JnU Chhatra League president and secretary, claiming I was involved with them. That photo was from my tenure as the secretary of the JnU Recitation Club. I have never been involved with Chhatra League in any capacity—not in rallies, meetings, or processions. Without verifying anything, they aggressively approached me, three of them attempting to attack, while others started throwing chairs. A police team intervened and barricaded me to prevent harm."
He added: "I was accompanied by a local elder, and they even tried to assault him. The police suspected that the elder could also be targeted. This appears to be a premeditated act. They are familiar with me, yet they caused this disturbance without consulting the JnU Chhatra Dal leadership. However, we prefer to consider this a misunderstanding and urge all parties to maintain peace."
On the other hand, Suhrawardy College Chhatra Dal President Jasim Uddin said: "I misjudged the situation. It was a misunderstanding regarding an old photograph, and I regret the commotion caused."
Sutrapur police station OC Saiful Islam said: "During the meeting, the Suhrawardy College Chhatra Dal president created a disturbance over a photograph involving the Shibir secretary. To avoid any untoward incident, we immediately escorted the Shibir secretary to my office. The issue was resolved with the assistance of senior police officials and after Jasim Uddin acknowledged his mistake."
