Confusion surrounds the death of the student, with multiple sources providing conflicting accounts

Update : 24 Jan 2025, 04:48 PM

A mysterious death of an outsider student occurred at Rajshahi University (RU), on Thursday

The incident took place around 10:30pm near the Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building on campus.

The deceased, Shimul, 21, was the son of Jamal Mia from the Budhpara area of Middle Meherchandi under Motihar police station in the city.

Shimul was a student of Rajshahi College.

Confusion surrounds Shimul’s death, with multiple sources providing conflicting accounts.

According to doctors, he died from a brain hemorrhage, and there were no external injuries or blood stains on his body.

However, his family claims he was beaten to death.

Meanwhile, the university proctor said that the death resulted from an accident while trying to escape on a motorbike.

Eyewitnesses reported that Shimul had come to the campus with his girlfriend.

At some point, a group of young men chased them.

In an attempt to escape on a speeding motorbike, Shimul was allegedly intercepted by a group playing badminton, who then attacked him indiscriminately, causing severe injuries.

Shimul was later declared dead at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

Shimul’s father, Jamal Mia, said: “My son went to the university with his girlfriend. When the university's proctorial team’s car appeared, they tried to leave quickly on a motorbike. A group of students stopped them, suspecting my son, and attacked him with a bat. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to RMCH, where doctors pronounced him dead. I am now at Motihar police station to file a case.”

An eyewitness said he was standing by the road where some were playing badminton.

Suddenly, a motorbike sped by, prompting people to leave the game and chase it. Initially, he thought it was a robbery.

The bike overturned, and a girl fell to the ground.

The boy appeared seriously injured and unconscious.

People rescued him, but he is unsure about the actual events, adding that no one beat the boy at the time.

Regarding the incident, University Proctor Professor Mahbubor Rahman said: “Our assistant proctors were patrolling around 10pm on Thursday when they saw a boy and girl behind the third science building. On seeing the proctorial car, they tried to leave quickly on a motorbike. The road is under construction, and the accident happened there.

"Our team sent him to the university medical center and later to RMCH. Shortly after, we learned that the boy had passed away. The bike is currently in our custody at the proctor’s office,” he added.

An emergency department doctor at RMCH said: “The boy was brought in from RU around 11pm, but he was already dead upon arrival. There were no visible injury marks on his body. He died due to a brain hemorrhage. His body has been sent to the morgue.”

Motihar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Malek said: “We are investigating the matter, but the exact details are not yet clear. We are speaking to all involved to uncover the truth. No case has been filed yet, but it might be soon.”
