A 12-member investigation team, led by the prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Barrister Moinul Karim, has arrived in Rangpur to investigate the murder of Abu Sayed, in connection with the anti-discrimination movement.
The team began their investigation on Monday morning with a visit to the crime scene at Begum Rokeya University (BRU), as well as interviewing eyewitnesses.
At 9:05am, the team arrived at Shaheed Abu Sayed Square, located in front of the university, where Abu Sayed was shot and killed by the police on July 16. The team also reviewed video footage of the shooting incident that had circulated on social media and inspected various spots related to the event.
Eyewitnesses, including university students Abrar Shamim and Arman Hossain, briefed the investigation team on the events that took place during the incident.
Barrister Moinul Karim, the prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, said after the visit: “The investigation is focused on the anti-discrimination movement in greater Rangpur, including the martyrdom of Shaheed Abu Sayed. His death sparked widespread outrage, both in Bangladesh and internationally, which is why we have prioritized this case.”
“Following the receipt of a complaint at the tribunal a week ago, we initiated the investigation. As part of this process, we have visited the site of the murder, gathered information, and interviewed eyewitnesses who were present at the scene.”
He continued: “Under the Chief Prosecutor’s guidance, a team of nine investigators and three security officers has been dispatched to conduct this investigation. We are treating Abu Sayed’s murder with utmost seriousness. Once we have gathered all the necessary information, we will issue arrest warrants for those responsible.”
A case has already been filed under the Penal Code regarding the murder of Abu Sayed. However, Barrister Moinul Karim confirmed that there are no restrictions on filing a case under the International Crimes Tribunal Act as well. He assured that necessary actions would be taken promptly.
The investigation team is also set to meet with BRU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Shawkat Ali, and other witnesses throughout the day to gather further testimonies and continue their inquiry.
