A border coordination meeting has been held between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the sector commander level in Benapole, Jessore.
On Wednesday morning, the meeting took place in the conference room of the BGB’s Benapole BOP under the leadership of the BGB's Khulna Sector and the BSF’s Kolkata Sector.
The meeting saw the participation of a 22-member BGB delegation, led by Colonel Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury, sector commander of Khulna, alongside the BSF's Kolkata Sector Commander, DIG Tarni Kumar, who led a 16-member BSF team.
Khosru Raihan, additional director (Operations) of the Khulna sector, confirmed saying: "A highly productive discussion took place during the meeting on various matters of mutual interest concerning the India-Bangladesh border.”
He added: “Among the topics discussed were the implementation of effective measures to prevent any incidents of fatalities along the border, enhancing efforts and adopting more effective strategies to prevent the smuggling of drugs from India, taking necessary steps to curb illegal border crossings, and measures to prevent the smuggling of various goods, particularly gold, across the border.”
“The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Border Security Force (BSF) agreed on these issues," he also said.
He continued: "In light of the 1975 Bangladesh-India Joint Border Agreement and the Integrated Border Management Plan, both sides agreed to resolve any emerging border issues promptly and peacefully through dialogue.”
The additional director further said: “In addition to fruitful discussions regarding the progress of illegal construction and development work along the border, the heads of both delegations expressed their firm commitment to working together to ensure the safety of the border's surrounding populations and to maintain peace and order along the border."
Earlier in the morning, the BSF delegation, led by DIG Tarni Kumar, entered Bangladesh through the Benapole International Checkpost.
Upon their arrival, BGB’s Khulna Sector Commander Colonel Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury and the commander of Jessore 49 BGB Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Saifullah Siddique, greeted them with flowers.
The delegation was then escorted to the BGB camp in Benapole, located two kilometres inside Bangladesh from the international checkpost.
