A Dubai-bound passenger, Iftekharul Alam Roni, 28, was detained at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong on charges of human trafficking.
Public Relations Officer Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil confirmed the detention, adding that Roni was detained by airport immigration police at 8pm on Saturday based on intelligence provided by the National Security Intelligence (NSI).
Roni is allegedly involved in a human trafficking ring and faces two cases under the Human Trafficking Act. One case is currently in the Comilla District and Sessions Judge's Court, while the other is lodged at Brahmanpara Police Station in Comilla.
According to airport sources, Roni was scheduled to depart for Dubai on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-147) at 8:50pm on Saturday. However, acting on intelligence from NSI, he was detained before boarding.
The public relations officer of Shah Amanat International Airport said: "Iftekharul Alam Roni is a key figure in a human trafficking syndicate, with pending legal charges confirming his involvement in this illegal activity.”
Further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the extent of his operations.
