A case has been filed regarding the harassment of freedom fighter Abdul Hai Kanu in Chauddagram, Comilla on Wednesday afternoon.
The case was filed at the Chauddagram police station. The case names 10 individuals and includes 10-12 unnamed suspects. The case details accusations of demanding Tk2.5mn as extortion from the complainant, along with claims of defamation amounting to Tk1bn.
The complaint, signed by Abdul Hai Kanu, was sent to the police station through several local freedom fighters after being sent from his home in Feni. The case was recorded soon after.
The accused in the case are: Abul Hashem Majumdar, 48, Oheed Majumdar, 40, Russell, 30, Ismail Majumdar, 40, Belal Majumdar, 45, Peyar Ahmad Majumdar, 37, Noyon Majumdar, 32, Emran, 34, from Kuliara village of Chauddagram and Shimul, 35, from Patadda village, Rubel, 35, from Shanpur village, and 10-12 other unnamed suspects. Among these, only Ismail Majumdar, one of the five arrested under Section 54 on Tuesday, has been named in this new case.
In the complaint, the freedom fighter mentioned that after the revolution on August 5, the accused have been harassing pro-independence people and freedom fighters, demanding large sums of extortion.
For the past few days, the accused have been demanding Tk2.5mn from him. They threatened that if he didn't pay, he would not be able to stay in his house.
When he refused to pay the extortion, the accused became angry, threatening to kill him and set his house on firOn the day of the incident, Sunday, the complainant was sitting at a pharmacy in the local Patadda market. The accused came to the pharmacy, dragged him by force to the local Kuliara Primary School, and detained him in a room of the school. There, they physically assaulted him by kicking, punching, and beating him severely.
At one point, the accused tried to slit his throat while he was lying on the floor. As he managed to escape the room and reached the school yard, the accused put a necklace made of old shoes around his neck and made him walk around the school field and the road. Later, local people rescued him from the clutches of the accused.
The complainant further mentioned in the case that his reputation has been damaged by Tk100b due to this incident.
Abdul Hai Kanu, the freedom fighter and complainant, said: "On Tuesday, a copy of the case file was snatched from me outside the Feni court building. Due to illness and safety concerns, I was unable to visit the police station. Therefore, I sent the complaint to the station on Wednesday through several freedom fighters and relatives, led by former freedom fighter commander of Chauddagram, Promoth Ranjan Chakraborty."
Abdul Hai Kanu’s son, Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan Biplob, a leader of the Jubo League, said: "The main accused, Abul Hashem and others, have not been arrested yet. Four individuals who witnessed the event and stood by have already been arrested by the police. Since the incident, I have been worried for my father and have been to Feni. We are afraid that another attack could happen at any time."
This evening, the officer-in-charge of Chauddagram police station, ATM Akhtar-Uz Zaman, confirmed that the case has been recorded. He also said that the police are continuing their efforts to arrest the named suspects in the case.
