BNP opens district office in Gopalganj after 17 years

Former Gopalganj BNP president Sirajul Islam Siraj says the party could not maintain an office in the district for 17 years due to harassment by law enforcement

Update : 13 Dec 2024, 03:28 PM

After 17 long years, the Gopalganj unit of the BNP has inaugurated its office in the district.

The opening took place on Friday morning in a tin-roofed house at Gatepara in the town, and former president of Gopalganj BNP Sirajul Islam Siraj officiated the event as chief guest.

Notably, Gopalganj, the birthplace of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has long been considered an Awami League stronghold. The inauguration comes around four months after the ouster of the Awami League regime through a mass uprising.

A brief meeting was held on the occasion with speeches delivered by Olama Dal leader Md Omar Faruk, BNP leaders Azizur Rahman Beno, Alamgir Hossain, and Khairul Islam.

Following this, prayers and supplications were performed.

In his speech at the ceremony, Sirajul Islam Siraj said that during the past 17 years of Awami League rule, it was not possible for the BNP to maintain an office in Gopalganj.

He alleged that law enforcement agencies harassed and oppressed the party's leaders and activists during this time.

Siraj expressed hope that the inauguration of this office would invigorate the BNP's organizational activities in Gopalganj.

He also urged party members to steer clear of opportunists.

Afterwards, leaders and activists of the party distributed leaflets containing the BNP's 31-point outline for reforms among the attendees.
