Army Constable Wasim murder: 7 arrested sent to jail

Seven people arrested in connection with the murder of Army Constable Wasim Akram, 26, in Sherpur, have been sent to jail.

The remand hearing for two of the accused is scheduled for December 9.

Sherpur Sadar police filed the case following the incident. Sadar Police Inspector (Investigation) Jahangir Alam Khan confirmed the developments on Tuesday night.

The arrested individuals are Maina Mia, 35, Based Mia, 22, Alam Khan, 55, Kamala Akhtar, 35, Halima Khatun, 55, Azim Ali, 36, and Shamim Ahmed, 28, all from villages in the Charsherpur area.

Earlier, Wasim's brother, Jasim Mia, filed the case naming Wasim’s cousin Ranju as the prime suspect and listing 21 others. Additionally, 10-12 unidentified individuals have been included as accused, bringing the total to 33.

Constable Wasim Akram, a member of 34 Bir of the Bangladesh Army stationed in Jalalabad Cantonment, Sylhet, was returning home after harvesting paddy when he was fatally attacked over a land dispute.

The police produced the seven suspects before the court on Tuesday afternoon. A seven-day remand application was submitted for two suspects, Maina Mia and Based Mia. Judge Iqbal Mahmud set the remand hearing for Monday and sent all the accused to jail.

Wasim, the son of farmer Abul Hasan from Nijpara village in Sadar upazila, was reportedly ambushed and hacked to death over the ongoing land dispute.
