In protest against the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, the Chittagong District Lawyers' Association started observing a boycott of courts on Wednesday morning.
Abul Kalam Azad, nazir at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Chittagong, said court proceedings are not taking place as the association's members are absent.
Advocate Nazim Uddin, president of the lawyers' association, said one of their colleagues was brutally beaten and hacked to death, blaming Iskcon followers for it. "In protest, we have organizationally decided to boycott the courts for the entire day today."
Earlier, on Tuesday, a clash erupted in the court area in Chittagong following the rejection of a bail plea for Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson for the Sanatan Jagaran Jot and a former Iskcon leader.
His followers clashed with law enforcement, and at one point during the violence, lawyer Saiful Islam was taken away from the court premises and hacked to death.
Saiful Islam Alif was a resident of the Chunati area in Lohagara upazila.
He became a member of the district lawyers' association in 2018 and later registered as a lawyer at the High Court.
Meanwhile, from Tuesday afternoon to midnight, security forces conducted operations in the port city, detaining over 30 individuals.
