Police have arrested a former leader of Chhatra Dal named Irman Ali Shobhan in Barisal in a case filed in connection with the incident of raping a young woman overnight after abducting her.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barisal Metropolitan Kotwali police station Mizanur Rahman confirmed the matter on Thursday.
OC Mizanur Rahman said that after receiving the information, an immediate raid was conducted and the accused youth was arrested.
During this time, the young woman was rescued by police.
Earlier, on early Thursday November 21, he was arrested in a raid in Ward No 25, in Rupatoli area of the city.
After initial investigation revealed that several others were involved in the incident.
Police operations are also ongoing to arrest them.
The OC said that the woman has filed a case with the police station.
The rape survivor has been sent to the One-stop crisis centre for medical examination.
The arrested JCD leader Irman Rupatoli is the son of the deceased Yusub Ali of the Ward No 25.
Irman is the former joint convener of Ward No 25 Chhatra Dal and is currently a candidate for the leadership of ward Jubo Dal.
The police, citing the victim, said that a young woman from Kawnia area came to visit Rupatoli area with her male friend on Wednesday afternoon.
Then Irman and his associates took both of them hostage from the area.
From there, the abductors locked the woman in a room of Irman and raped her overnight. At that time, the young woman's friend was locked in another room. They demanded Tk50,000 as ransom after snatching her mobile phone.
In addition, he was severely beaten by four of Irman's associates.
On early Thursday, when the male victim assuring to collect money went out and then rushed to the Kotwali police station to report the details.
Then the police conducted a raid in the area and arrested Irman, but his associates managed to flee and rescued the woman.
It is worth noting that there are various allegations against Irman about widespread extortion and beating of transport workers in the Rupatoli area.
In addition, it is also known locally that he is in control of the drug syndicate in the Rupatoli area.
