Shahidul Islam Nirab, a district correspondent for The Daily Star, was injured in an attack by miscreants at Pogaldigha College grounds in Sarishabari, Jamalpur on Friday evening.
Locals said that the Communist Party’s Pogaldigha Union branch organized a Students’ Union conference at the college on Friday afternoon. Mistaking it for a Chhatra League conference, a group of individuals armed with sticks attacked the venue.
Shahidul Islam Nirab, who was present to cover the event, identified himself as a journalist, but the attackers ignored him and assaulted him. He was rescued by locals and admitted to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Narrating the incident, Nirab said: “I went to cover the Students’ Union conference organized by the Communist Party. While gathering news, a group of people attacked me with sticks, leaving me injured.”
Sarishabari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Chan Mia said: “We were not informed about the conference. Upon learning about the attack, police were sent to the spot. Several people, including the journalist, were injured. I also visited the injured journalist at the hospital. Legal action will be taken if a formal complaint is lodged.”
