Rupganj fire: Death toll rises to five

Incident happened while lighting mosquito coil

Another person who sustained burn injuries following an explosion from a gas leak at a residence in Narayanganj’s Rupganj, has died. 

The victim Selly, 35, passed away in the ICU of the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute around 1pm on Friday.

The death toll rose to five with her death. 

The burn institute's residential surgeon, Dr Tarikul Islam, confirmed that she had suffered 30% burns.

He mentioned that none of the six burn victims from Rupganj are out of danger.

Previously, four other individuals who were also burned in the same incident had died while undergoing treatment.

It is noted that the incident occurred on October 26 when an attempt was made to light a mosquito coil.

Six members of the household were burned and were later admitted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.

The victims include the house owner Mohammad Babul, 4, his wife Selly, 35, their son Mohammad Ismail, 11, and their daughter Mosammat Taslima, 9.

Another son, Mohammad Sohel, 20 and his five-month pregnant wife Munni,18, were also affected.

Mohammad Babul is the son of the late Yad Ali from Shojapur village in Nabiganj upazila, Habiganj district.

At the time of the incident, his other son was at work in a garment factory, while the rest of the family members were injured in the fire.
