Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have rescued 222 turtles of endangered species during a raid on a Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus on the Bhola-Barisal regional highway.
A team of RAB-8 conducted the raid in the Bandar Thana area under Barisal Metropolitan Police on Thursday, RAB sources said.
Md Fahim, 27, the supervisor of the bus, and Sajib Sheikh, 26, the driver’s assistant, were detained during the raid.
RAB said they conducted the raid on a tip-off and searched through the BTRC bus. Soon they discovered the turtles hidden in four sacks.
The rescued turtles were handed over to the Directorate of Wildlife Conservation.
The arrestees were also handed over to the police for legal action under Section 6(1) of the Wildlife Conservation and Safety Act-2012, RAB said.
