The body of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sadarul Hasan, 44, was recovered from the Padma River by a team of divers from the Fire Service and Civil Defense.
The recovery took place around 3pm on Tuesday, approximately two kilometers downstream from the Kuthibari ghat area in Shilaidah Union, Kumarkhali upazila.
SM Firoz Ahmed, station officer of Kumarkhali Fire Service and Civil Defense, confirmed the recovery, saying: "The body of ASI Sadarul Hasan was retrieved from 1.5 to 2 kilometers downstream in the Padma River. The search operation is still ongoing."
The search has been active since Tuesday morning, with a team of 11 divers using two boats for the second consecutive day.
The incident occurred early on Monday, around 4am, when two police assistant sub-inspectors went missing after an attack by assailants while attempting to apprehend a warrant-listed criminal in Kumarkhali. The attack took place in the same area of the Padma River.
While ASI Sadarul Hasan's body has been recovered, another officer, Mukul Hossain, 37, remains missing.
Three others were injured in the attack, including a police officer from Kumarkhali Thana and two local Union Parishad members, Shanowar Hossain and Anwar Hossain.
Kumarkhali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said that six police officers were traveling by boat to apprehend the wanted individual across the river. The attackers, having previously clashed with local residents, believed the police were coming to confront them. They suddenly capsized the police boat, leading to injuries among those onboard.
"During the capsizing, one police sub-inspector was injured from hitting the boat, and two Union Parishad members were reportedly assaulted, but their injuries were not severe. While everyone managed to swim to safety, two ASIs remain missing," he said.
