Prisoner found dead in Brahmanbaria jail, guard suspended

The victim was in jail since November 22, 2020 in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act

A prisoner has been found dead in Brahmanbaria district jail.

The body of the prisoner was recovered from a jail cell with a towel wrapped around his neck around 9:50pm on Thursday. 

One prison guard was suspended for negligence, and departmental cases have been filed against two other guards.

The deceased is Md Jewel, 34, son of Abu Chan Mia from the village of Charchartola in Ashuganj Upazila.

He had been in jail since November 22, 2020, in connection with a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Following the incident, Ripon Barua, the prison guard on duty, was suspended for negligence.

Additionally, Chief Guard Abdur Rashid and Assistant Guard Uttam Kanti Barua face departmental charges for the same reason.

According to jail sources, a case was filed against Jewel on November 20, 2020, under Section 11(k)/30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 (amended in 2003).

He had been in the district jail since November 22, 2020.

On Thursday at 9:50pm, he was found unconciuos in a cell with a towel wrapped around his neck.

The on-duty prison doctor initially declared him dead.

Later, he was taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital for confirmation.

The doctors at the hospital's emergency department declared him dead.

Md Ikramul Haque, the acting jail superintendent of the district jail and assistant commissioner of the district administration, also confirmed the matter. 

The deceased’s family has been notified, and the body has been handed over to them after completing the necessary procedures, he said.
