A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and transformed into cyclonic storm Dana, bringing cloudy skies and light rain to coastal areas, including Gabura, Padmapukur, and Burigoalini in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira, adjacent to the Sundarbans.
Zulfiqar Ali Ripon from the local office of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the deep depression became a cyclone on Wednesday.
A local warning signal No 2 has been issued for the coastal region, with forecasts indicating that rainfall may increase after the evening, he added.
He also warned that rain could continue into Thursday and Friday.
Mohammad Shahinul Alam, disaster management officer for Shyamnagar, said 162 cyclone shelters, including 102 government facilities, have been prepared to address the impact of Cyclone Dana.
He said sufficient supplies of dry food have been stockpiled, and 2,980 members of the Community Preparedness Program (CPP)—comprising an equal number of men and women—are on standby to ensure safety and provide assistance. Additional volunteers are also ready to help in the event of an emergency.
Prince Reza, executive officer from the Bangladesh Water Development Board in Shyamnagar, highlighted that there are approximately 360 kilometres of embankments in the area, with six to seven points identified as particularly vulnerable. Ongoing work is being conducted at several risky locations.
