Update : 22 Oct 2024, 07:27 PM

Gas has been discovered in an old well in Haripur of Sylhet.

This has been confirmed by the authorities of Sylhet Gas Field Limited after two rounds of workover.

Currently, gas is being flowed from Well No 7 following the workover.

A second round of testing was conducted, revealing gas at a depth of just 1,200 meters.

Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, managing director of Sylhet Gas Field Limited (SGFL), confirmed the information.

He stated that workover on the old gas well Sylhet-7 began in July of this year. On October 14, gas was found at a depth of 2,010 meters. On Tuesday, gas was again found at a depth of 1,200 meters in another zone of the well.

He mentioned that it is difficult to provide accurate information about the amount of gas available before conducting further tests. He added that gas testing might take an additional three to four days. However, it is preliminarily estimated that an average of 8.5 million cubic feet of gas can be extracted daily.

He also indicated that preparations are underway to bring the adviser to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources to Sylhet, and formal announcements will be made upon his arrival.

Mizanur Rahman noted that previously, 60-70 million cubic feet of gas obtained from other wells in Sylhet Gas Fields has been added to the national grid. The gas from Well No. 7 will soon be integrated into the national grid.

Earlier, on May 24 of this year, after drilling, gas was discovered at the 8th well in the Kailashtila gas field in Sylhet, yielding 21 million cubic feet of gas daily at depths between 3,440 to 5,500 feet.

Before that, on January 27, a new layer of gas was discovered at the 2nd well in Rashidpur, part of the Sylhet Gas Field, with an estimated amount of approximately 157 billion cubic feet.
