Eggs imported from India are now being cleared at a reduced customs duty of 5% instead of 25% at the Benapole land port in Sharsha of Jessore,
Starting Monday, the Benapole Customs Authority has begun clearing egg shipments at this lower duty rate, down from the previous rate of 25%.
Importers will enjoy this 5% duty rate until December 15 of this year.
At this rate, each egg is expected to be sold at wholesale for Tk9.
According to port sources, on Monday around 12:30pm, a shipment of 231,840 eggs was cleared by the importing company, Hydroland Solutions.
Previously, importers had to pay a duty of Tk1.83 per egg; now, they will only pay .76Tk per egg.
The newly imported eggs from India will be sold at wholesale for Tk9 each.
The shipment arrived at the Benapole port via the Petrapole border in India late Saturday night, October 19. It took the importer two extra days to clear the eggs at the reduced 5% duty.
The customs clearance was facilitated by the C&F agent, Ratul International.
To control market prices and increase supply, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued an order on October 17 to reduce the duty. This directive was implemented at the Benapole customs on Sunday.
Despite the increase in egg imports, no noticeable impact has been seen in the market. Consumers are still paying Tk60 for four eggs.
Ikramul Hasan Sojib, a representative of Hydroland Solutions, stated: “It took us an extra two days to clear the eggs at the government-specified lower duty. Today, we have cleared the shipment at a 5% duty. Prices should now decrease, with each egg expected to be sold for around Tk9.”
Rashedul Sojib Nazir, Deputy Director of the Benapole Land Port, confirmed that the importer took two days longer to clear the shipment. The importer received full cooperation, and the shipment was cleared at the reduced 5% duty instead of the previously set 25%.
Customs House sources reported that approximately one million eggs have been imported through the Benapole port from November 5 of last year to October 19.
Only one importing company has brought in these eggs. Although several companies have been granted permission to import eggs by the government, not all have started importing yet.
