A large cache of ammunition and military equipment was recovered during a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) operation on Shahpari Island in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, on Sunday.

One person has been detained in connection with the smuggling.

Lt Col Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of the Teknaf Battalion (BGB-2), said the operation was conducted around 4am based on secret information.

The arrested individual, Shafiul Alam, 55, is a resident of the Jaliapara area on Shahpari Island.

"Acting on a tip-off, the BGB's anti-smuggling patrol team raided a house in the Jaliapara area, about 800 meters southwest of Shahpari Island BOP. The smuggler had reportedly hidden military equipment smuggled from Myanmar in the house," said Lt Col Ahmed.

During the operation, BGB personnel surrounded the suspect’s house and conducted a search. Shafiul Alam attempted to flee but was apprehended. A significant quantity of bullets, rocket bombs, grenades, and compasses were recovered from two bags hidden beneath sandbags in the yard.

Lt Col Ahmed added: "Shafiul Alam had illegally brought these military items from Myanmar with the intention of smuggling them into Bangladesh. He will be handed over to Teknaf Model police station after interrogation on charges of arms and ammunition smuggling."
