Workers of Nipro JMI Pharma Ltd and JMI Syringe and Medical Devices have blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Gajaria, Munshiganj, demanding the implementation of a 21-point charter of demands, causing traffic congestion.
The protest began at 8am on Wednesday in front of JMI Industrial Park, located in the Vitikandi area of Gajaria upazila.
The workers are calling for various improvements, including a Tk4,000 wage increase for all permanent senior employees.
Their protest caused a traffic jam stretching approximately three kilometres on both sides of the highway.
The protesters said they are protesting due to poor working conditions and insufficient wages.
One worker, Arman, said: "I work the day shift here. Two days ago, a worker died because they could not take leave and received no medical treatment. The factory lacks proper healthcare facilities, not even oxygen.
"The food quality is terrible, and I only earn Tk9,000. With the rising cost of living, I cannot support my family with such a small salary," he added.
Gajaria police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman arrived at the scene after the highway was blocked. He attempted to calm the protesters, promising to discuss their demands with the factory management.
However, the workers continued to block the road, refusing to leave until their demands are addressed.
"I arrived after receiving news of the protest and am trying to pacify the workers," the OC said.
