An initiative was taken to sell sliced ilish for low-income individuals

Update : 10 Oct 2024, 03:46 PM

Fish traders in Rajshahi on Thursday refused to sell ilish unless it weighed at least 250 grams, despite their promise to sell single pieces of fish on Wednesday.

The Saheb Bazar Fish Traders' Association inaugurated the initiative to sell sliced ilish at the Saheb Bazaar fish market, aiming to provide a special opportunity for low-income individuals on Thursday.

However, traders announced that buyers could purchase cut pieces of ilish fish only if they weigh at least 250 grams.

Meanwhile, buyers said that while sliced ilish was available, they had to pay extra to get it.

As a result, many customers came to the market hoping to buy the fish but left empty-handed.

Leaders of the Rajshahi Business Coordination Council said that many people do not get to eat even one piece of ilish a year. This initiative was implemented with their circumstances in mind.

According to the market prices in Rajshahi, a 300-gram ilish is being sold at Tk600 , a 500-gram ilish for Tk1,100 , an 800-gram ilish for Tk1,500, and a 1-kilogram ilish for Tk1,600 per kilogram.
