Former Member of Parliament for Sunamganj-5 Constituency Mohibur Rahman Manik has been sent to jail.
Sunamganj Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Alamgir presented him before the court and subsequently ordered his transfer to Sunamganj District Jail at 11am on Thursday.
Mohibur Rahman was brought to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court from Sunamganj Sadar Model police station under heavy security. His lawyer, Abdul Hamid, confirmed the development.
According to court sources, Mohibur's lawyers applied for his bail, but as the original case documents are with the Sessions Judge's Court, the bail hearing has been scheduled for next Monday. The court ordered his detention in the meantime.
Mohibur Rahman was arrested on Tuesday night from Dhaka's Bashundhara residential area. He was brought to Sunamganj on Wednesday night.
He is the third accused in a case concerning the attack on anti-discrimination student protesters in Sunamganj on August 4.
Former planning minister MA Mannan, three former MPs, and an additional superintendent of police are among 99 individuals named in the case, which was filed under the Speedy Trial Act.
The case was filed by Hafiz Ali, the brother of a student injured during the attack on September 2. It was submitted to Sunamganj Speedy Trial Court Judge Nirjan Mitra.
