The flood situation in Sherpur and Mymensingh districts has improved as the water level in all major rivers surrounding the districts is receding. However, hundreds of people are still stranded and are facing shortages of food and clean drinking water in these two districts.
Around 50,000 people in the Haluaghat and Dhobaura upazilas of Mymensingh have been affected by the ongoing floods but many are yet to receive any relief.
The army, RAB, BGB, and various departments are collaborating with the local administration and voluntary organizations to distribute relief supplies.
However, some areas are experiencing delays in assistance due to a shortage of boats, as clarified by the authorities.
Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Tarfdar Mahmudur Rahman said that water levels in almost all rivers in the district are below the danger mark.
He noted some improvement in the overall flood situation as water levels recede, revealing signs of damage.
Lieutenant Colonel Hasan Hafizul Haque of the 13 BIR battalion assured that efforts to alleviate the suffering of the affected communities would continue.
In Sherpur, a five-year-old child named Rahim drowned in floodwaters in Nakla Upazila yesterday.
On Monday, another child named Jimmy Akhtar also drowned in floodwaters in the Ghonapara area of Nalitabari.
Altogether 11 people have so far lost their lives in the current floods in Sherpur.
In Netrakona, hundreds of villages in Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Purbadhala, Barhatta, and Netrakona Sadar upazilas have gone underwater. Homes, roads, and various educational institutions have been flooded, and approximately 20,000 hectares of Aman paddy have been destroyed.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) in its latest bulletin said that the water level of the Brahmaputra River is decreasing while that of the Jamuna has remained stable in Rangpur and Kurigram. As a result, the water levels of the rivers may remain stable for the next 24 hours in Rangpur division.
The water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers are on a receding trend and flowing below the danger level. The water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may decrease and flow below the danger level over the next three days, the FFWC added.
In Sylhet division, the water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers have been receding and flowing below the danger level.
The level of water in 39 stations monitored by the FFWC has risen in the last 24 hours while it decreased in six stations.
The Met Office predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds for Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions today.
Additionally, a few places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong are likely to experience similar weather conditions, it added.
