Police have arrested Umme Fatema Najma Begum, alias Sheuly Azad, former MP of the reserved women's seat in Brahmanbaria.
On Sunday night, the Detective Branch (DB) of the police arrested her from her residence in Niketan, Dhaka. That night, she was handed over to Sarail police station.
This information was confirmed by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sarail Police Station, Abdur Razzak. On Monday morning, he said: "Umme Fatema Najma Begum has been arrested from Dhaka. She is currently in our custody and will be presented in court today."
He further stated that Umme Fatema Najma Begum has been arrested in connection with a murder case filed at Sarail Police Station on September 3. She is the 4th accused in the case. The case was filed by Sultan Uddin, a resident of Rasulpur village in Chunta Union.
According to the case statement, Liton Mia,27, son of Mujan Mia from Katanishar village in the upazila, was killed by gunfire during the Hefazat-e-Islam protests on March 28, 2021, which opposed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh. Liton Mia was a battery-operated rickshaw driver. Sultan Uddin filed the case regarding the incident.
Umme Fatema Najma Begum is a member of the Brahmanbaria district awami league. She is also the wife of the late AKM Iqbal Azad, the senior vice-president of Sarail Upazila Awami League.
