Water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river systems continued to rise while the Teesta marked a fall in the Brahmaputra basin in the last 24 hours ending 9am on Sunday.
Officials of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water levels of major rivers might continue to rise during the next 24 hours in the basin.
A bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of BWDB on Sunday forecast that the Brahmaputra and Jamuna are in a rising trend but flowing below the danger mark (DM).
Water levels of these rivers may continue to rise for the next five days but may flow below the DM in the Rangpur division.
Water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may remain stable in the next 24 hours and may fall in the next 48 hours, but may flow below DM in the division.
“In the upstream Indian states, the recorded rainfalls during the past 24 hours till 9am today (Sunday) were 62mm at Cherrapunji and 50mm at Shillong points,” the bulletin said.
Besides, in the downstream Brahmaputra basin inside Bangladesh, the recorded rainfalls were 194mm at Kurigram, 178mm at Kawnia in Rangpur, 63mm at Pateswari in Kurigram and 41mm at Chilmari in Kurigram points.
Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Md. Mahbubur Rahman said that there is no flood situation as water levels of all rivers were flowing much below their respective DM at all points in the basin at 9am on Sunday.
However, some incidents of sporadic riverbank erosion are being reported from several areas along major rivers in Kurigram, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat districts where riverbank protection works are being conducted.
Meanwhile, water levels of the Teesta marked fall by 5cm at Kawnia point in Rangpur while rose by 25cm at Dalia point in Nilphamari during the last 24 hours.
“The Teesta was flowing 65cm below DM at Dalia point and 40cm below DM at Kawnia point at 9am today,” Rahman said.
Following further rise in their water levels, the Dharla was flowing below DM by 195cm at Kurigram while Dudhkumar was flowing below DM by 99cm at Patweshari point in Kurigram at 9am on Sunday.
Despite further rise in its water levels, the Brahmaputra was flowing below DM by 208cm at Noonkhawa, 247cm at Hatia and 217cm at Chilmari points in Kurigram at 9am on Sunday.
Following further rise in its water levels, the Jamuna was flowing below DM by 254cm at Fulchhari, 248cm at Bahadurabad, 220cm at Shaghata, 245cm at Sariakandi, 260cm at Kazipur and 237cm at Sirajganj points in the basin at 9am on Sunday.
“There is no possibility of flooding in the coming days even though water levels of major rivers continue to rise. We are closely monitoring the river situation in the river basin,” Rahman said.
