Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Amar Desh newspaper, has been released on bail in a case involving conspiracy to kidnap and attempt to kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her ICT advisor.
He was released from Kashimpur Central Jail Part-II in Gazipur around 3:30pm on Thursday.
Jail Superintendent Amirul Islam confirmed the release, adding that Mahmudur's bail papers arrived at the jail from the court earlier in the day. After verification, he was freed in the afternoon.
The Detective Branch of the police had filed the case at Paltan police station on August 3, 2015, accusing Mahmudur of plotting to kidnap and kill Joy.
Upon his release, Mahmudur Rahman did not speak to the media. He waved to those gathered outside the prison before leaving for Dhaka.
Earlier that day, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain’s court granted his bail.
In August 2023, the court sentenced five individuals, including journalist Shafiq Rehman, to seven years in prison for conspiracy to abduct and kill Joy.
The Ministry of Home Affairs recently suspended the sentences of Shafiq Rehman and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan for one year, following a petition.
A notification issued on September 22 stated that they must surrender and file an appeal as part of the suspension conditions.
